Collection Policy

Material Archiving

The South Piedmont Community College (SPCC) Archives Collection policy is that the library will take pertinent documents in their possession from the early days of the college, when in 1962 the organization was founded as the Ansonville unit of Charlotte Industrial Education Center. These documents will be digitally scanned into the library database to be used by researchers in the Union and Anson County population.  They will be made available to faculty, students, and other researchers accessing the library database. By including the digital library resources in the library’s digital collection, staff, students, and surrounding communities will be provided with pertinent researching materials. The records will also serve to preserve the rich history of South Piedmont Community College (SPCC).
 

What We Collect

South Piedmont Libraries will collect any historical or current articles pertaining to South Piedmont Community College. Documents will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Newspaper clippings
  • Interviews
  • Event Flyers
  • Photographs
  • Films/Videos

What We DO NOT Collect

  • Financial documents of any kind
  • Student work

History of the College

South Piedmont Community College traces its roots back to 1962. The institution was originally designated as the Ansonville Industrial Education Center by action of the State Department of Public Instruction. In 1967, the Anson County Board of Education and the Anson County Commissioners officially appointed a local Board of Trustees. As a result, the Ansonville Industrial Education Center became Anson Technical Institute, a unit of the Department of Community Colleges of North Carolina.

Further progress, larger enrollment, and additional support from the community, especially from Polkton Mayor W. Cliff Martin, enabled Anson Technical Institute to acquire land, obtain additional funds, and complete construction of a 28,000-square-foot building in Polkton in 1977. To better reflect the offerings of the institution, the Board of Trustees changed the name to Anson Technical College in 1979 and then to Anson Community College in 1987. 

While Anson Community College served the citizens of Anson County, neighboring Union County was not part of the service area of an existing community college. Therefore, in 1981, Union Technical Education Consortium was created when the North Carolina Department of Community Colleges authorized service in the county by a consortium of Anson and Stanly community colleges.

On May 19, 1999, Governor Jim Hunt signed a bill, based upon recommendations of an independent study team, to dissolve the charter of Anson Community College and Union Technical Education Center and form North Carolina’s newest community college. The signing of this bill created a single college with two campuses, one in Anson County and one in Union County, to serve the residents of both counties, and a new 14-member board of trustees was appointed. The new college was named South Piedmont Community College on August 3, 1999—the name selected from more than 400 suggestions made during a contest held earlier that year.

South Piedmont expanded its operations, constructing new buildings on the L. L. Polk Campus in Polkton, adding a new campus on Old Charlotte Highway in Monroe, and opening the Lockhart-Taylor Center in Wadesboro. The Center for Technology and Health Education was also opened just a mile from the Old Charlotte Highway Campus in 2013 and later renamed the Tyson Family Center for Technology in recognition of the generous support of Mr. and Mrs. Carlton Tyson and family.

In 2016, the people of Union County overwhelmingly approved a $40.2 million bond in support of SPCC to allow the college to expand and enhance its existing facilities in Monroe and build new ones, including a new 75,000-square-foot classroom and administrative building in Monroe and a new classroom facility in western Union County, to better serve its community and industry partners.

But even as South Piedmont continues to grow, extensive hands-on experience and one-on-one instruction remain hallmarks of SPCC’s approach to teaching and learning, as they have been throughout the college’s history. And South Piedmont’s status as an “up-and-comer” among the state’s 58 community colleges is good news for everyone who lives and works in the communities it serves as well as the companies that do business in Union and Anson counties.

SPCC Mascot Suggestions:  Elaine Clodfelter distributed a list of student suggestions for a SPCC mascot and asked the team to give her three to four preferred names, including any new names, so that the students could vote from that list.   The mascot name will be submitted to the Board of Trustees for approval during the April board meeting.

Mascot Comments:  Dr. McKay plans to form a group that will submit three to four preferred mascot names for the students to use when voting for SPCC’s mascot.  The mascot name will be submitted to the Board of Trustees for approval during the April board meeting.

Mascot:  Dr. McKay, Elaine Clodfelter, John Ratliff, and two students will meet next week to discuss the list of mascot names that the student body can use to recommend a mascot for South Piedmont Community College.  The mascot recommendation will be presented to the Board of Trustees at the next Board meeting for its approval.

SPCC Mascots:  The Board of Trustees has delegated the SLT authority to select the SPCC mascot.  The SLT will select the mascot at the next SLT meeting.

SPCC Mascots:  After the team discussed the top three mascots chosen by students and reached no consensus, Dr. McKay said he would meet with John Ratliff to discuss student interest.

Board Report Information 

Student Success 

For March 2006 

The Student Government Association held its March meeting in the teleconference rooms.  The meeting was well attended as planning continued for the Spring N4CSGA Conference in Raleigh, Casino Days, Spring Fling and the election of new officers for the coming school year.  A subcommittee presented SPCC Mascot drawings for the senate’s review and selection.  The SGA Senate recommended one drawing to be forwarded for approval.  The mascot drawing uses the Colonial three cornered hat along with the letters SPCC and the word Patriot’s.  The students voted unanimously to approve the drawing as our mascot and it will be forwarding to the SLT and Board of Trustees for final approval.

March 27, 2006 

Elaine Clodfelter distributed draft copies of a logo drawing for SPCC’s new mascot, Patriots, that were submitted by John Ratliff for SLT’s review.  The logo has been approved by the Student Government Association.  Fred Sparger was asked to meet with Mr. Ratliff to refine the drawing and return it to SLT for approval.
