What are some ways in which information possesses value?

  • Information possesses several dimensions of value, including:
  1. As a Commodity: Authors make money from the sale of their book.
  2. In Education: Students pay tuition; people with higher degrees (often) make a higher income.
  3. Through Influence: Those in control of information (Ex. govt.) influence who is privy to that information & to what degree.
  4. In Understanding potential: Access to information can increase a person's understanding of their potential, both as an individual and member of the community.

Why should you cite a source?

  1. To give proper credit to those whose work was used to produce new work.
  2. To lead readers of your work to the source of information for the benefit of bridging & furthering research.
  3. Because committing plagiarism would compromise your grades & taint your academic reputation.

When & where should you cite a source?

When in doubt, cite!

  • Outside of common knowledge information.
    • Common Knowledge is information that the average, educated reader would accept as reliable without having to confirm elsewhere. For example, the Presidents featured on Mt. Rushmore
  • Whenever using copyrighted information in the form of direct quotations, paraphrase, or summary.
    • Copyright refers to the exclusive legal right, given to an originator or an assignee to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material, and to authorize others to do the same.
