Accessibility Support at the SPCC Libraries

Online versions of Kurzweil screen reader and Dragon NaturallySpeaking speech recognition software are available for students with accomodations through the Disability Services Office. Library staff can assist with logging in and using the online versions of the software.

Both the Carpenter Library on the OCH Campus in Monroe and the Horne Library on the LLP Campus in Polkton have a computer with Kurzweil 3000 screen reader software and Dragon NaturallySpeaking speech recognition software available for use. Each computer is connected to a scanner that can be used to import printed documents into the screen reader program. If you need assistance using the software, please ask a library staff member for help.

Kurzweil 3000 is screen reading software usable by any struggling reader, including individuals with learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, or those who are English Language Learners (ELL).

Students with accommodations may have access to a newer version of Kurzweil software as well as a web-based version called Firefly. Students must contact Disability Services in order to use the newer versions, but user guides and other helpful information are available here: https://www.kurzweiledu.com/news-resources/product-guides.html

Dragon NaturallySpeaking is speech recognition software that allows voice-to-text writing and other functionality. Individuals with accessibility issues, from carpal tunnel and RSI to learning disabilities, face unique challenges when it comes to using a computer with standard keyboard and mouse.
